Bethesda has finally released a feature they teased last E3: the ability to use mods in the console versions of Fallout 4. In a post on Bethesda.net, the team said:
Starting today, we are excited to deliver on something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time – bring Mods to a console audience. With the latest title update for Fallout 4, Xbox One gamers are now able to browse Mods on Bethesda.net and, more importantly, can directly download and play Mods within the game’s main menu. Playing Fallout 4 on PlayStation 4? Your wait is almost over, too. We anticipate Mods arriving on the PS4 next month. […] Mods and the players who create them have always been an important part of our games, going all the way back to Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls Construction Set. We believe that our games become something much more special, when we put the power of creation in your hands. New quests, environments, characters, dialogue, outfits, weapons and more – with Mods, the possibilities of what you can do are endless. You are creating new experiences that enhance and take our games into amazing and surprising new directions.
There are some stipulations, though. Because the mods are only available from bethesda.net on console, there will be no mods that go against the site’s rules (ie: No nude mods and no copyrighted material). The amount of mods you can install cannot go past two gigabytes, and all mods still need to made on PC using Bethesda’s Creation Kit. Still, this is an exciting proposition, seeing as mods were (before this point) almost impossible without some form of hacking on console.
Bethesda will be holding another E3 conference this year, where they will most likely reveal the release date for Fallout 4 mods on PS4, along with (possibly) more add-ons for the game.
