(Disclosure: The Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter is not available yet, but I plan on backing the project when the campaign opens.)
Playtonic Studios, a dev team made up of former Rare developers, has finally lifted the veil on Banjo-Kazooie’s spiritual successor, Yooka-Laylee.
On Playtonic’s website, the team posted this summary of the game:
Yooka-Laylee *(previously ‘Project Ukulele’) is an all-new 3D platformer from the creative talent behind the *Banjo-Kazooie *and *Donkey Kong Country games. We’ve come together to form Playtonic Games and create a spiritual successor to our most cherished work from the past!
Our new heroes, Yooka (the green one) and Laylee (the wisecracking bat with big nose) were conceptualised from the ground up for stellar platforming gameplay, created by the same character artist behind the rebooted Donkey Kong family and legendary N64 heroes Banjo and Kazooie. Let’s collect some golden trinkets!
Playtonic is looking to open a Kickstarter campaign for Yooka-Laylee, and will give free copies of the game to people who give more than 10$. The game will be available on PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U.
UPDATE: The Kickstarter campaign has been a resounding success, reaching the base goal in less than 40 minutes, and as of this writing reaching all but one of the campaign stretch goal at a total of 1.3 million dollars with 45 days left in the campaign. This means if everyone goes well, Yooka-Laylee will be launching with a ton more features.
