World of Warcraft Introducing Real World Currency for Gold/Gold for Game Time

In an upcoming update on Battle.net, there will be an option that is similar to what some other MMO’s have today; real world currency exchange for user gold via tokens that can be redeemed for game time. The most famous example of this type of currency exchange system has to be the one featured in EVE Online, where you can buy game time by purchasing it with in-game currency. World of Warcraft’s subscription count has gone down again after the expansion last year and Blizzard is trying to get players to return by earning their subscription with skill and dedication.

As stated under the FAQ section, you will be able to sell these tokens in an auction house for money in the game. The amount of money the tokens will be sold for will be up to the market itself. The supply and demand will dictate the gold it will be sold for. The tokens will be sold for the same price in the same region. Each Token will be soulbound after it’s sold.

According Blizzard themselves they had this to say why they are putting this feature in:

“We’ve heard feedback from players that they’d be interested in a secure, legitimate way to acquire gold that doesn’t involve the use of unauthorized third-party gold-selling services—one of the primary sources of account compromises. We also know players who’ve amassed large amounts of gold through regular play would be interested in the ability to trade some to other players in exchange for game time, helping cover their subscription costs. The WoW Token feature gives players on both sides of the equation a secure and straightforward way to make that exchange. It opens up a new kind of payment option for World of Warcraft players, and we hope that it will also help lead to fewer account compromises and a better game experience overall.”

They go on by saying that they’re trying to make it harder for third partys to sell gold for real money with stolen accounts. They also want players to earn the gold and game time people have acquired. You can buy these tokens with real world money and they don’t want players to set the price for them. This way a player doesn’t have to worry about trading with another player. The player will be informed how the sell rate is established and how much they’re going for at that point in time.

The tokens can not be deleted and they don’t expire. There is no need to fear the lose of tokens. Making sure that you don’t make any bids unintentional you will be asked to confirm before purchasing the token. The Auction House in WoW does not take any cut and you get all the gold if you sell the token.
